Liberalism in 1776:

All men are "free" but not really, chattel slavery.

Liberalism in 1876:

All men are free, but Jim Crow

Liberalism in 1976:

No more Jim Crow.

Whether liberalism failed or not really depends on from what angle you look. Was it illiberalism that formally banished racism?
