Amazing work. This is something I've been trying to get at in a piece thinking through Neil Postman's medical technology chapter in Technopoly. Your concept of "hacking the human person" is exactly what has happened, dovetailing with his "ideology of the machine" in medicine, but also all of life.

Looking forward to reading the entire article! This is a critical part of the conversation every parent needs to be having when examining how their children are spending their time, from being educated to entertained -- "...bypassing ordinary human functions in a way that, while it may be pleasurable and often highly profitable in the short-term, threatens the long-term health of the individual and/or society."

Consumer debt has all of the addictive properties of social media. It hinders the productivity of individuals and families. Lots of bad side effects. By some of the criteria you've named, it should be banned.

Yet, the bible doesn't ban it; in fact, debt is a tool of dominion for covenant keepers over covenant breakers.

If conservative economics is going to be changed, please don't do it with 21st century sophisticated versions of prohibition arguments and paternalism; i.e. "what's good for society" style collectivism. Do it with a radical biblical focus on actual individual identifiable victims, and identifiable biblical penalties to compensate victims.
